Top 5 tips for brides with shorter or fine hair

Top 5 tips for brides with shorter or fine hair_engageweddings.co.uk

If you’re worried your hair isn’t long or thick enough to achieve your dream style for your big day, Hertfordshire based wedding hair specialist Nicola Marshall will put your mind at ease with her top 5 tips below:

1. Try a half-up half-down style

The half-up half-down style can be great if you’re going for a classic straight/curly look, but feel you’re lacking in volume. The top half-up can be backcombed and pinned, creating the glamorous illusion of height and thickness. This style also gives a great settings for tiaras, veils and other hair accessories.

2. Tools of the trade

When you’re deciding on a stylist, try to find out whether they are well-established and have an extensive kit. When I turn up to bridal party preparations I look like I’m arriving for a 2 week holiday with all my tools and bags! Heated rollers are one of my secret weapons; they almost double the amount of hair, so popping these in prior to styling gives volume and flexibility. Another of my favourites are a pair of crimpers to give volume at the roots. This will give a good foundation if you’re looking for a fuller up-style.

3. Chignons and buns

Find a stylist who is confident in using hair padding or ‘doughnuts’ (the hair kind, not the sugary kind – sorry!) to create the illusion of thick, full hair. This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to add volume to fine, shorter hair. I always carry a range of colours and sizes in my kit for every bridal party. They can be worked into low side buns or chignon styles for a chic, simple look.

4. Consider hair extensions

Hair extensions can be used to add length or thickness (or both!) to your wedding hairstyle. There’s no need to make a commitment to more permanent extensions either, as clip-in extensions look just as great. Extensions can be styled in flowing glamour waves, half-up half-down, or all piled up; there are really no limits. Speak to your stylist who can recommend what will work best to achieve your dream hair for the day.

5. Don’t limit yourself

You’ll have your wedding pictures to look back on for years to come, and you’ll want everything about the day to have been as perfect as possible. Instead of picking a hairstyle based on what you think can be achieved with your short/fine hair – choose a hairstyle that you love and will really work with your dress. A wedding hair specialist will make it their mission to achieve that perfect look for you.

Finally, in the run up to the big day, make sure you look after your hair and yourself. A good hair care routine and a balanced diet will help promote optimum hair growth. Get regular trims with a stylist you trust and explain what you’re working towards style-wise for your big day. They will be able to prescribe a hair care regime to make sure your hair is in tip top condition for when you walk down the aisle.

Thank you Nicola. It’s so easy to think you can’t achieve your dream look, but by working with a stylist in the lead up you can ensure your day is perfect!
