A lot of couples do go further afield than Europe for their honeymoon but in recent months, Penny from Suitcase Travel has seen a real trend to stick to Europe and going all out for a luxury hotel for the best experience. It makes perfect sense as you don’t have a long flight and jet lag to deal with. Plus, it fits in perfectly with the weather with our summer weddings for those that definitely want to go on their honeymoon straight after their wedding day.
Greece is proving to be a perfect choice. There are plenty of islands to stay at, all with their own charm and personality that you will certainly find one that you will both fall in love with. What also makes Greece so perfect is that it has lots of luxury hotels that make you feel like you are further afield. Here are Penny’s favourite luxury hotels in Greece.
Santorini is the epitome of luxury out of all the Greek islands and the Grace Hotel is simply the best of the best. The hotel is carved out the clifftops giving spectacular views! You will not get tired of the sunsets each night. The hotel’s infinity pool is also award winning so you can also enjoy the view during the day in heavenly surroundings. Our top tip is not to each too much at lunch time as dinner here something not to be missed. You get the best views of Santorini’s famous caldera and the ocean whilst enjoying some of the tastiest food you will ever try.
Looking for a property that comes with amazing views from the hillside and a private tranquil bay and beach you need to look no further as Daios Cove in Crete is just the property for you. It really is an oasis of calm, which is perfect for recuperating after your big day. The resort has everything covered to make it as relaxing as possible, even a funicular-style lift to take you back to your room from the beach saving you from climbing back up to the hotel. The waters are always sparkling so it will be hard to not want to dive in. The Resident’s Club all-inclusive package is definitely something to consider if you want to budget before you go as you then won’t have to spend any money whilst you are enjoying your luxury surroundings.
Mykonos is a perfect island with plenty of chic bars and restaurants to enjoy and the Mykonos Grand Hotel & Resort is no exception to this style. It is an intimate hotel that has a very romantic ambience to it so is a ideal choice for a honeymoon. Whether you prefer the beach or pool (or love both just as much) this hotel will suit you wonderfully. The location is right on the beach and is extremely picturesque – you won’t be able to stop taking photos! You can most definitely enjoy relaxing in peace as attendants will come round to you for your drinks whilst no motorised sports are allowed in this area retaining the tranquil atmosphere throughout. We highly recommend heading to the White Bar that has an outdoor terrace for some drinks before going to Mykonos Town for a night out.
Skiathos is part of the Sporades island, which just has all the Mama Mia vibes. In fact you can do a day trip to the neighbouring island Skopelos where the first Mama Mia film was actually filmed. Skiathos is a quieter Greek island yet with plenty happening and the luxury still in full force. Elivi Skiathos is no exception! It has a hideaway feel to it and sits atop the Pounta Peninsula so is no surprise why it is a popular choice for honeymooners. The views are truly captivating and the hotel has plenty of sleek pools and direct access to four of the islands beast beaches or you to enjoy. We highly recommend having a room with either a private hot tub or pool just to sit back and enjoy the views in style.
This one is perfect for a Familymoon. I always say that because the children are joining you on your honeymoon, it does not mean that you cannot still enjoy a little luxury too. There are plenty of options for you all to have a good time in luxury and Ikos Dassia in Corfu is my personal favourite choice in Greece. The hotel comes with a private beach, heated indoor and outdoor pools, a separate children’s pool, a top-class spa and unlimited activities including a world-renowned tennis club. There is also a free shuttle service to Corfu town so you can go out exploring easily. The hotel simply embodies everything family focussed meaning that the children and adults all have the best holiday ever. The resort is all-inclusive but my favourite part of the hotel is that they have teamed up with some local restaurants where you can enjoy dinner in the local surroundings but is included in your all-inclusive package.
This hotel is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World – a group of the best hotels in the whole world. Each room comes with a sea view so you can enjoy the mesmerising views at all times. The hotel is the epitome of luxury and style and is an idyllic couple’s only retreat. The hotel is all about the service! After staying here you will not want to come home as you will miss not being looked after all the time by the excellent team who are there to give you the best time without feeling intrusive. The hotel is located just outside the village of Lindos, which is a must to explore and enjoy the tavernas at lease once during your stay here. The hotel has not one but two infinity pools – so definitely a hotel for the pool lovers. If you want a quieter island than Santorini but still the full luxury experience, this is where you need to stay.
