TELL US ABOUT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
I’m Sally and I run Halo Blossom Floral Design in Bishops Stortford. I help couples who want beyond dreamy wedding florals and want to work with someone who will really listen to what they want, produce gorgeous, high-end results and be super lovely to work with along the way. I’m a music and nature-loving mum of two, always wear a flick of black eyeliner, drink far too many coffees and collect vintage magazines.
WHY DID YOU START YOUR WEDDING BUSINESS?
It really did bring several passions together for me. I had worked in publishing for 12 years, launching new magazines for clients. This involved meeting potential clients, talking through what they wanted, coming up with a proposal for them, then overseeing the magazine launch. I loved being given a brief and turning this into a reality, but I was also aware that I didn’t want to commute to London to do this every day as I wanted a family. I also have a real passion for nature and wanted something I could do more locally that involved this. I’d always had a dream of one day opening a flower shop, but given my love of working on one-off projects to meet a brief, wedding flowers seemed like the obvious choice. I can also get ridiculously enthusiastic about things, which is just what’s needed for a wedding!

WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN WEDDINGS?
So many reasons! They are one of life’s real happy occasions, and I’m very much a cup half full kind of person. I thrive on the importance of this day too — it’s incredibly special to be involved in such an occasion, so the rewards are huge. To know you’ve made a couple so happy on such an important day gives me a real buzz. There is nothing better than walking in with a crateful of bouquets for a bride and seeing her reaction. It’s an amazing feeling. And then there’s that final glance at a decorated space just after we’ve cleared up and are about to leave. It makes me incredibly proud. But I also love the planning stage, when I first chat with a couple. I love hearing all about their day and what they hope to achieve. I often leave a meeting with my head buzzing, and itching to get on with their mood board. Who doesn’t love a good wedding, right?
WHAT KIND OF COUPLE DO YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH?
Definitely, a couple who appreciate my expertise, professionalism and creativity, so will trust me to deliver what they are looking for. Once we’ve agreed on a mood board and proposal, it’s great when I’m given the freedom to walk into the flower market and be able to choose what I feel will be just right for them without being too restricted. I also love couples who want personal touches at their wedding and who consider flowers an important part of their day. I’m not a fan of overstyled florals, and love flowers to look more like nature intended them to. It’s incredibly flattering when couples have pinned lots of my work on their boards too, so I know we are a great fit from the outset, especially those who pin some of my favourite images. And, of course, a couple with a huge budget!

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE BOOK YOU FOR THEIR WEDDING DAY?
Well because I’m just lovely to work with of course! I really like to make the whole process as enjoyable and relaxed as possible. The florals are a real opportunity for a couple to put their own stamp on a venue, and I’m so mindful of this — listening to a couple, really listening to their hopes and dreams, and interpreting their vision is one of my favourite parts of my job, and something I really pride myself on. It’s all about a balance between being professional and creative, and being approachable and just a nice person to work with.
WHAT QUESTION DO YOU GET ASKED ALL THE TIME BY COUPLES AND WHAT’S THE ANSWER TO IT?
Does it matter if I’m not exactly sure what I want? I get asked this over and over. The short answer is no, not at all, followed closely by ‘I bet you have a much better idea of what you want than you think’. Most couples apologise for their mood board before they share it with me as they think it’s a mishmash of all sorts. But I can generally pick through the board to unearth the common themes and help them work on this to get what they really want.
WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE PIECE OF WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE?
Go with your gut when booking suppliers and choose someone you feel you have a connection with. The whole process should be enjoyable, not a chore. So choose people you like and trust. Your gut is very rarely wrong.

DO YOU HAVE A DREAM WEDDING VENUE, LOCATION OR WEDDING THEME THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO WORK AT?
I absolutely love Hedingham Castle, and the space they use for ceremonies. I’ve worked there a few times, but haven’t ever had the chance to be properly let loose. The Banqueting Hall is a huge space, filled with exposed stone and packed with history. I love the idea of filling this with an abundance of tumbling florals and candles. I feel a styled shoot coming on…
