The song that you dance to during your first dance as a married couple should be a joint decision, as the memory will stay with you both for your lifetimes. After your wedding day, every time you hear the song, you’ll be transported back to that special moment, so make sure you choose it together and are both really happy with it.

When choosing your first dance song, there is much more to consider than simply whether you like it. If you think a song could be a contender, READ THE LYRICS! I can’t stress it enough, as it is the single most common first dance mistake. If the lyrics are ‘you’ then that song could be ‘the one’. If the lyrics aren’t your cup of tea or just don’t reflect your relationship then it’s not the one for you.

You might not have an ‘our song’ but you might share a love of a particular artist or style of music and this is a great place to start. Think back through your relationship to concerts you went to, musicals you saw or songs you enjoyed on holiday. Use Instagram and YouTube to see what other couples did for their first dance. Spotify has several great ‘first wedding dance song’ playlists and there are lots of great blogs. Use film and tv to get ideas, the soundtrack of your favourite movie is a great place to start and Strictly Come Dancing is a minefield of ideas!

For example, we’ve had a couple getting married at a Wildlife Park choose a song from Lion King. Another time a couple who were having their wedding in the French ski resort of Courchevel, chose Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell. I thought it was fabulous when a couple asked for Charlestone by Sam Levine, as they were getting married in a 1920s-style hotel!
