Winter weddings are wonderful and have a magical feel to them, and you can carry this magical experience with a minimoon to see the Northern Lights. Having the chance to see the Northern Lights is mesmerising and the perfect holiday for a romantic escape.
Penny from Suitcase Travel is here to talk about some of the best short breaks in Scandinavia to enjoy your first few days as a married couple whilst ticking off something from your travel bucket list.
Classic Iceland
Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital and largest city, is a volcanic island made up of hot springs, geysers, glaciers and powerful waterfalls. It is the northernmost capital city in the world, so it is a great spot to see the Northern Lights. Stay in this vibrant and energetic city with some of the country’s most prominent natural wonders. While away your days exploring the rugged landscape before switching it up a gear at night hunting for the majestic Northern Lights.

ION Hotel Iceland
If you want to do something a little different in Iceland, staying at the ION Hotel is ideal. You get to stay in Thingvellier National Park, which is one of the best spots to see the Northern Lights as well as some of Iceland’s most beautiful natural wonders.
The contemporary, designer hotel, nestled in the Thingvellir National Park is less than an hour’s drive from bustling Reykjavik. It is ideally situated to both explore the city and enjoy the many attractions that the National Park has to offer. We recommend spending a couple of nights here, followed by a couple more nights in the centre of Reykjavik itself.

Arctic Treehouse in Finland
Situated above the Arctic Circle, a stay at the Arctic Treehouse means you will have the most wonderful time as you have the best opportunity to see the Northern Lights in Europe whilst staying in an amazing room that will make you go wow! Each suite has large floor-to-ceiling, north-facing windows that beckon in the surrounding nature and Arctic skies. Spacious and designed in a modern contemporary style, the suites exude luxury. Just imagine watching the Northern Lights from the comfort of your own suite.

Levin Iglut
Another wonderful glass igloo in Finland that will make your friends and family jealous is the Levin Iglut resort. Our favourite part of these igloos is their location. They are in such a remote spot that you will receive the most amazing sights in the sky at night. You will see stars like never before and be surprised how many there are that you do not usually see, plus you obviously get to sleep with the Northern Lights dancing above you. Do not worry about being cold, as the modern igloos come with heated glass dome roofs. The area is just as amazing in the daytime, with a true winter wonderland scene where you can enjoy reindeer rides, husky dog sledging and even a wilderness cooking lesson.

Tromso and Malangen Resort
Norway is another fabulous country to visit to spot the Northern Lights. The city Tromso is known as the gateway to the Northern Lights and is an excellent place to do some whale watching if you would like. You can even do a distillery tour in the Lyngen Alps too. Just a 90-minute drive away from the city, you will arrive at the relaxed and isolated Malengan Resort, which is the perfect place to spend some time beneath the Norwegian winter sky watching the Northern Lights. Both places also give you the chance to enjoy exciting excursions such as husky sledging and reindeer sleigh rides too.
