As a wedding photographer I get asked lots of questions when I meet couples to discuss their wedding plans. Below are the questions I feel are worth you asking wedding photographers to help you understand their different packages and help you decide who might best fit your wedding day.

So you’re engaged and happily planning your wedding. You have a date and a venue, now you’re starting to look at wedding photographers and realising there are lots of options out there. So how do you find the wedding photographer that is right for you? After all those photo’s are going to be with you for a lifetime so you need to be sure you are happy with your final decision.

1- How many hours are included in your package?

This is an important question as some photographers do set time limits, or the package may have a coverage limit, for example 8hrs or up to the speeches. Every photographer will be different so be sure they will be present for the parts of the day you want covered. You will also need to be clear if they have an hours limit what happens if things run late? In my experience it is rare for a day to run on time, I’ve had first dances 2hrs late, this is fine if your photographer is not on a time limit, they will wait but if they are only booked for so many hours there is a chance they could leave or if they stay you will be required to pay for the extra coverage.

2 Can we meet for a face to face discussion before booking you?

This may seem odd, you like their work, their coverage and package fits your budget so why meet them? Photographers are one of those suppliers who spend the whole day with you. I have started bridal preparations at 7am and not left the venue until almost 11pm. That’s a lot of time with the wedding couple and their guests. It’s really important that we get along with each other and you feel comfortable around your wedding photographer. I’m often helping brides get dressed, pinning buttonholes, ironing shirts, what ever needs doing, but you need to like your photographer enough to be comfortable having them around to do this. If you don’t like your photographer it will show in your wedding photo’s. So arrange to meet them, it doesn’t need to be formal just a coffee and chat.

3. What is included in my wedding package?

Every photographers wedding package will be different, so check you understand what’s included. As well as coverage mentioned above, how will you receive your images, for example on a USB on or online download. Is an album included in the package and if not how much is it to add one.  Is a pre- wedding shoot included or is this an optional extra you can add?

4. Do you work alone or with a second photographer?

Either is fine, many photographers work alone, other’s work in a pair to increase your coverage. It’s a personal choice for them. If they do work alone, you can often ask them to add a second photographer to your package. This comes in useful if you want to capture both of your mornings getting ready, as realistically they can only be in one place in the morning. It also gives you a different angle on your ceremony and more coverage through out the day. Some wedding photographers also work with an assistant. This is not a photographer, they are there just to help the main photographer and won’t pick up a camera. So be sure to understand what’s actually included.

5. When will I receive my wedding photos?

Again every photographer will be different, this should be in your contract but it is worth asking when you are first talking to photographers. Some photographers will offer you a social media sneak peek, this gives you some professional photo’s while you wait for the main batch to be edited.

6. What happens if your ill on my wedding day or an accident or emergency prevents you from attending?

This is not something you really want to think about but it is an important question to ask. Your photographer should have a contingency plan in place. For example I have a list of trusted wedding photographers I can phone who will jump in their car and head to a wedding for me no questions asked. They work the way I do and I know I can trust them fully with a wedding. I have done this myself when a photographer had an accident which led to urgent eye surgery, I headed to their wedding and looked after their client as if they were my own. Make sure your photographer has a plan in place, just in case.
